Rain to return this week with chance of thunderstorms and flooding
The Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms across West Yorkshire, including Bradford, effective on Thursday, August 27, from 6am to 10pm. The alert warns of potential disruption from intense rain, lightning, and hail.
Warm, humid air moving north across England and Wales is triggering heavy, thundery downpours this week. Met Office chief forecaster Steve Willington noted this unstable system will bring prolonged rainfall, increasing the risk of localized impacts.
Forecasters expect accumulations of 20-30 mm of rain within three hours, with up to 50 mm in 12 hours possible in some places. Hazards include "Lightning and hail of 1-2 cm will also be hazards."
Sudden flooding could close roads or cancel bus and train services, while residents should prepare for potential power cuts. There is a small risk that fast-flowing floodwater may cause "Danger to life."
Residents are advised to secure loose items like garden furniture and prepare emergency kits with torches and batteries. Monitoring local forecasts regularly is recommended, as weather conditions may change quickly.
