HT Evening News Brief October 6: Rahul Gandhi-Led Oppn March to ECI, Nobel Prize in Physics and More
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra staged a sit-in after police stopped the march, and several Opposition leaders were detained, officials said.
- On Tuesday, opposition MPs led by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra marched from Parliament toward the Election Commission to confront Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter roll irregularities, resulting in police detaining several leaders.
- Tensions stem from an investigation published last month by The Indian Express, which reported that two of India's three Election Commissioners repeatedly objected to 'illegal' changes to Form 6 and centralized control of the ECINET voter roll software.
- After security blocked their march, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra staged an impromptu sit-in at Akashvani Bhavan, keeping protesters approximately 300 metres from the Election Commission office throughout the standoff.
- Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the Congress, describing the protests as 'daily drama' and accusing Gandhi of repeatedly attacking constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission and the Supreme Court.
- An Instagram reel showing Rahul Gandhi standing atop Delhi Police barricades garnered over 2.7 million views, illustrating his strategy of cornering the government during public protests and amplifying the opposition's message.
