Award-Winning Keralam Filmmaker R. Sarath Passes Away
The National Award-winning filmmaker also served in Kerala cultural posts and earned nine international awards, officials said.
- On Monday, September 7, 2026, noted filmmaker, screenwriter, and cultural administrator R. Sarath died at age 65 in Thiruvananthapuram. He was receiving treatment for kidney-related ailments at KIMS Hospital.
- Sarath entered the film industry with his 2000 debut, Sayahnam, which explored the aftermath of nuclear tests at Pokhran. The film won seven Kerala State Film Awards and the Indira Gandhi National Award for Best Debut Film.
- His extensive filmography includes Sthithi , Sheelavathi , and the Indo-Chinese co-production The Desire . Beyond cinema, Sarath conducted research on Raja Ravi Varma murals, earning a Junior Fellowship from the Government of India in 1996.
- Sarath held several cultural administrative roles, including serving as secretary of Bharat Bhavan and director of the MPCC. He also directed Paradise , which received international recognition at the Mexican International Film Festival and Amsterdam Film Festival.
