Questions arise over Lumby mayor's double election campaigns
Acton says he will cover any mayoral by-election cost if he wins both races, while challengers question who should pay.
Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton is campaigning for re-election while simultaneously seeking the Vernon-Lumby MLA seat for the Conservative Party, creating an unusual overlap between the municipal election on Oct. 17 and the provincial vote on Oct. 24.
Acton stated the decision offers voters choice during the overlapping election cycles, emphasizing public service and accountability; he faces incumbent NDP MLA Harwinder Sandhu, OneBC nominee Chantel Gibbs, and Brad Weston for the mayoral seat.
To mitigate taxpayer expenses, Acton pledged to personally cover costs for a mayoral by-election should he win both offices, stating "I don't believe Lumby taxpayers should be left with the bill because I chose to step forward and serve."
Should a by-election occur, incumbent village councillor Randal Ostafichuk has declared he would seek the mayor's seat, while fellow councillors Geoff Bevan, Sherry Kineshanko, and Lori Mindnich will return to village council by acclamation.
Brad Weston, the mayoral challenger, stated that if Acton wins the MLA seat, "I will work closely with him to bring forth what the residents of Lumby want," as the community navigates the overlapping electoral timeline.
