No More Counting Items: Publix Changes Express Lane Rules
Publix says the change will give workers more flexibility and reduce wait times as some stores begin rolling out the new express lane process.
Lakeland, Florida-based Publix Super Markets eliminated the 10-item restriction for express lanes this week, allowing associates greater flexibility to manage customer flow and reduce checkout wait times.
Company officials noted that shoppers routinely ignored the previous restriction, causing inconsistent enforcement and slowing service; the chain stated the revision focuses on reducing wait times and ensuring efficient customer service.
Not all customers embrace the change, with one Reddit user describing the express lane as "just another checkout lane," while another complained the lane "stands there empty, like a ghost observing the self-checkout machines."
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported the change may not have reached all stores yet, while a survey found that traditional express lanes do not consistently reduce wait times despite their intended purpose.
This operational shift marks the third notable adjustment by Publix this year, following the discontinuation of Publix Pay in March and a revised firearm policy aligned with a Florida appeals court ruling.
