The public service in Hesse continues to grow to over 340,000 employees. However, a historical peak from 1981 remains unmatched.
According to provisional results, some 5.5 million people in Germany were employed in the public service on June 30, 2025. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on June 23, 2026, this was 95 100 employees or 1.8% more than a year earlier.
