Protest in Abuja as FG workers reject concession of Unity Colleges
Union leaders said concessioning the schools would weaken access to affordable secondary education and national integration, and vowed to keep striking until the plan is withdrawn.
- On Monday, workers and trade union leaders at the Federal Ministry of Education protested in Abuja against the proposed concession of Federal Unity Colleges, displaying placards and demanding immediate reversal of the plan.
- The dispute between the Federal Government and teachers unions centered on plans to transfer Kings College, Lagos, to private interests or its Old Boys Association.
- Trade union leader Comrade Gali Habib said the colleges provide quality secondary education at subsidized rates to children from less-privileged families, questioning: "If you are selling these schools to private organisations, will the children of the poor be able to access quality education again?"
- Staff representatives warned that privatization could weaken the colleges' role in national integration and make quality secondary education less accessible to families unable to afford private fees.
- Habib said the union would sustain industrial action until the government reversed the concession decision, urging the Federal Government to increase funding for infrastructure and teacher welfare instead.
