Protest in Abuja as FG workers reject concession of Unity Colleges
Workers and union leaders demanded more funding for Federal Unity Colleges, saying the concession plan would limit affordable education and weaken national integration.
- On Monday, workers and trade union leaders gathered at the Federal Ministry headquarters in Abuja, protesting the proposed concession of Federal Unity Colleges and demanding the Federal Government immediately reverse the plan.
- The protest followed a dispute between the Federal Government and teachers' unions regarding the planned concession of King College, Lagos, to private interests or its Old Boys Association.
- According to NAN Comrade Gali Habib, these Unity Colleges provide quality education to children from less-privileged families at subsidized rates, and workers argued that private entities could undermine affordability and their role in promoting national integration.
- Habib said the union would sustain industrial action until the Federal Government rescinded the proposal, demanding the government prioritize adequate funding for infrastructure and teachers' welfare instead of handing institutions over to private interests.
- Uko described King as a national heritage institution that helped bridge educational inequalities for Nigerians, while workers questioned whether children of the poor would retain access to quality education if the government sold these schools to private organizations.
