Persistent heat and exceptional water deficits have worsened summer crop prospects across western and central Europe, with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre warning that some of the worst-affected areas could face crop failures and growing shortages of fodder.
Extreme heat and drought affecting Europe have lowered yield expectations for summer crops, particularly maize and soybeans. According to European Commission data, temperatures have risen 4-6 degrees above normal. Soybean yields have fallen 14 percent below the average of the last five years, and declines are expected for maize and other crops as well.
