Detroit Judge Among Four Charged with Exploiting Vulnerable Adults
Four Detroit residents, including a judge, face charges of embezzling hundreds of thousands from vulnerable wards through a multi-year guardianship fraud scheme.
- Recently, federal prosecutors indicted four residents in Detroit, including a Michigan district judge, on charges related to guardianship fraud and exploitation, according to U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr.
- Prosecutors say the alleged abuse stemmed from Guardian and Associates, appointed fiduciary in over 1,000 cases, to misappropriate funds from wards' estates, as part of the guardianship system.
- Federal investigators say the indictment details conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and false-statement charges involving the judge and defendant Andrea Bradley-Baskin.
- U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi applauded recently and said `no one is above the law`, while U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. emphasized public trust concerns.
- With Guardian and Associates appointed in more than 1,000 cases, the scheme allegedly deprived incapacitated wards of funds and services, raising risks to the public trust in guardianship and probate.
