Pro-Palestinian Protesters Arrested at Israel Event in Amsterdam - DutchNews.nl

Police arrested about 45 protesters after they sprayed slogans and hung a giant Palestinian flag during a banned counter-demonstration.

  • On Friday, police arrested around 45 pro-Palestinian protesters who disrupted an Israel demonstration at Amsterdam's Dam Square near the national war memorial.
  • Amsterdam Palestina Coalitie lost a court case earlier today attempting to overturn the city council's ban on counter-demonstrations. Mayor Femke Halsema's office cited public disorder risks for denying the permit.
  • Protesters hung a large Palestinian flag from a shop facade overlooking the monument and sprayed red paint on the ground. Police removed the flag and relocated the sanctioned counter-demonstration to Oude Turfmarkt, around 500 metres away.
  • Following the disruption, authorities led members of the arrested group away from the square. The public prosecution service will now decide whether to bring formal charges against those detained.
  • The original event, organized by Christians for Israel, proceeded at Dam Square despite the unrest. Speakers included Chris Stoffer, leader of the SGP, and Dutch chief rabbi Binyamin Jacobs.
