Prince William serves 'calorie grenade' cake on dales trip
William heard how farmers are diversifying to cope with rising fuel costs, while a community hydro plant now powers about 38 homes.
On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Prince of Wales visited Crow Tree Farm in Swaledale, North Yorkshire, to discuss industry challenges and opportunities with multi-generational farming families.
Prince William met with farmer Adam Hunter, his wife Leanne, and children Annie and Ted, plus neighbors Philip Metcalfe, his son James, and Michael and Hannah Waggett regarding farm diversification efforts.
The Prince asked farmers about industry "headwinds" due to rising fuel costs and shared a box of cakes from a nearby shop, calling the selection a "calorie grenade."
Following the farm visit, the Prince toured the community-owned River Bain Hydro plant in Bainbridge, where an Archimedes Screw generates electricity for 30 homes.
As the Duke of Cornwall, he highlighted rural sustainability efforts, and Adam noted afterward, "He understood the area and understood a lot more than you would think.
