Ottawa launches new national AI council to advise on safety, deployment
The council will advise on AI deployment, risk management and adoption as Canada pursues its AI for All strategy.
On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney launched the National Council, a 13-member group tasked with providing independent, practical expert advice on Canada's AI transformation.
The Council will guide the national AI strategy released this past June, which focuses on accelerating AI adoption, fostering national champions, and building sovereign AI infrastructure.
Notable tech leaders join the group, including "AI godfather" Yoshua Bengio, Sanja Fidler, Ajay Agrawal, Jordan Jacobs, Mila CEO Valérie Pisano, and Canadian Cloudflare co-founder Michelle Zatlyn.
Other members include CPP Investments CEO John Graham, Senator Thomas Pitfield, and Patrick Pichette, who recently became CEO of the Government's new Digital Transformation Agency.
In their recommendations, Agrawal suggested proposing moonshot AI projects to drive infrastructure creation, while Pichette advised Canada to become the world's lowest-cost safe data centre infrastructure provider.
CANADA is establishing a National Council on Artificial Intelligence to advise the government. The goal is to encourage responsible use of AI, strengthen the economy and build public trust in the technology.
