Cost of a pint hits £10 in London for first time
Pubs and bars are charging more for rounds and non-alcoholic drinks as London’s drink prices rise during the bank holiday, the Telegraph reports.
On Monday, London pint prices surpassed £10 for the first time, with Stanley's rooftop bar in Mayfair charging £11 for Moretti and £10 for Guinness.
Guinness maker Diageo revealed draught prices would surge by 5.2 per cent in April, with pub owners telling the Morning Advertiser that suppliers seemed 'hell-bent on having the first £10 a pint beer.'
While the UK average pint costs £4.52 according to the British Beer and Pub Association, pubs face extreme financial pressures from increased National Insurance contributions and business-rate changes.
Ash Corbett-Collins, Camra's chairman, told The Telegraph that pubs and breweries should not be blamed for rising prices as industry experts warn the government must do more to keep venues affordable.
Landlords welcomed the government's January U-turn on scaling back business-rate relief, though venues still demand further support on VAT and alcohol duties to sustain affordable pub-going.
