President Trump pushes new crypto rules amid scrutiny over his financial interests
On Wednesday, President Trump hosted cryptocurrency and prediction market executives at the White House to establish industry regulations. He urged Congress to pass the Clarity Act and outlined his 'Project Crypto' initiative.
Disclosure forms reveal Trump earned nearly $1.5 billion from cryptocurrency investments last year, with holdings including $800 million from World Liberty Financial and $635 million from Trump Meme Coin. Scrutiny intensified after a federal regulator conditionally approved World Liberty Financial five days ago.
Richard Painter, former chief ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, warned that "there is surely a conflict of interest" when the president has substantial investments in a regulated industry. The White House countered that "there are no conflicts of interest" and Trump "only acts in the best interests of the American public."
Separately, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is investigating Gabriel Perez, the president's former teleprompter operator, for potential insider trading on the prediction market Kalshi. Investigators allege Perez used advance speech knowledge to place trades.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released today found that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe it is inappropriate for Trump and his family to profit from cryptocurrency while in office, including 3 in 10 Republicans.
