Asian Games 2026: 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod shoots a perfect 10 to make Asiad recurve archery history
On Saturday, Indian archer Kumkum Anil Mohod defeated South Korea's Oh Ye-jin in a shoot-off to win the women's individual recurve gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.
Kumkum's victory followed a successful Friday campaign where she secured the women's team recurve gold with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma, then won mixed pair silver alongside Dhiraj Bommadevara at the Asian Games.
Tied at 5-5 after five sets, the match required a shoot-off where Kumkum hit a perfect 10 and Ye-jin managed an 8, deciding the tense contest.
With this victory, Kumkum became the first Indian woman to win an individual recurve medal at the continental Asian Games event, contributing to India's total medal tally of 77.
By reaching the semifinals, Kumkum secured an Olympic quota place for India at the Los Angeles Olympics, with the quota belonging to the country per international rules.
The South Korean women's archery team finished the Asian Games without a gold medal in the recurve event for the first time. This is a first in the 48 years since archery became an official Asian Games sport at the 1978 Bangkok Games. On the 3rd, Oh Ye-jin competed at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games held at the Okazaki Central General Park Multipurpose Plaza in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
