He came to power promising to combat crime and the armed groups that have regained power in the country, and he received the support of President Trump.

In his first hours of government, the president of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, ordered several military operations against armed groups in the country. Experts consulted by Sputnik indicated that it is expected that there will be more clashes but that the security forces "will not be intimidated."
