Indonesia’s Prabowo Names New Foreign, Industry Ministers in Major Cabinet Reshuffle
- On Thursday, President Prabowo Subianto replaced Foreign Minister Sugiono with career diplomat Arrmanatha Nasir, marking the second major cabinet change in less than three weeks.
- The move follows Prabowo's September 14 dismissal of Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, replaced by deputy Suahasil Nazara to restore confidence in the $1.5 trillion G20 economy.
- Sugiono, the Gerindra Party secretary-general described by Antara as Prabowo's "ideological child," becomes Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, replacing Pratikno after nearly two years as foreign minister.
- Nasir, the ministry's former permanent representative to the United Nations, recently led Indonesia's delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, bringing diplomatic credentials to the role.
- Analysts suggest the foreign ministry had been sidelined, with Prabowo playing a dominant role in policy; Nasir's appointment is expected to trigger a significant shake-up at the ministry.
