Powerful nor’easter expected to blanket parts of Atlantic Canada

The nor'easter may cause coastal flooding, power outages, and snowfall totals up to 50 cm in parts of Newfoundland and Labrador, Environment Canada warns.

  • A powerful nor'easter is headed for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador, bringing widespread snow totals exceeding 20 cm from Sunday afternoon into Tuesday afternoon, Environment Canada says.
  • Environment Canada notes this is the third nor'easter in three weeks with stronger winds and a risk of coastal flooding along the Atlantic coast.
  • Winds are forecast to produce gusts of 60 to 80 km/h with coastal gusts up to 90 km/h, snowfall rates of 2 to 4 centimeters per hour, and blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibility and create large drifts.
  • Schools and services have cancelled or delayed classes and closed municipal services, while Nova Scotia Power activated its Emergency Operations Centre as outages affected about 100 customers.
  • Officials expect the snow to taper to flurries in Cape Breton by midday as winds shift, with 35 to 50 cm forecast for Avalon Peninsula, Burin Peninsula, and St. John's.
