Powerful Drama Leads BAFTA Scotland Awards Nominations with Seven Nods
BAFTA said the change follows a February broadcast controversy and a review that found weaknesses in planning and crisis coordination.
The biopic I Swear, which chronicles Scottish Borders Tourette syndrome campaigner John Davidson's life, leads this year's BAFTA Scotland nominations with seven. Winners will be announced at a Glasgow ceremony hosted by Edith Bowman on November 15.
Davidson, the film's executive producer, sparked controversy at the February 2026 BAFTA Film Awards in London when his involuntary Tourette's tics caused him to shout a racial slur while presenters Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage.
BAFTA chair Sara Putt and CEO Jane Millichip confirmed they consulted safeguarding experts to enable Davidson to attend by watching via video link from a "separate relaxed space" within the venue alongside his family and friends.
Officials stressed that involuntary vocal tics are "neurological in origin" and do not reflect personal views. Davidson previously stated he was "deeply mortified" by the incident, prompting BAFTA to overhaul its safeguarding and crisis coordination procedures.
While nominations for the 14 competitive categories were determined by industry juries, the public can vote for the BAFTA Scotland Audience Award until Friday, October 30 via bafta.org. Winners across all categories will be revealed in mid-November.
