More than 8 Million New York Residents to Receive up to $200 Energy Rebate Checks
Eligible households will get automatic payments under the $1 billion POWER program, and the state said no application is required.
- On Monday, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that 8.2 million New York households will receive energy rebate checks of up to $200 starting Sept. 21 as part of the $1 billion Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate program.
- Designed to offset rising energy costs, the POWER program will automatically mail checks through December to eligible taxpayers who filed a 2024 New York State Resident Income Tax Return, requiring no separate application.
- Eligible residents receive between $100 and $200 based on filing status: joint filers earning under $150,000 get $200, those between $150,000 and $300,000 receive $150, and single filers below $150,000 get $100, per the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
- Since 2021, the Hochul administration has provided more than $7.6 billion in direct utility bill relief, plus an additional $1.4 billion for energy efficiency projects. The FY27 budget established a new RATES Commission to address rising utility bills.
- Governor Hochul stated the rebates address rising living costs, arguing "many families are struggling with rising household energy bills." She criticized Washington Republicans for soaring costs, emphasizing efforts to put money directly back into New Yorkers' pockets.
