Diver Injured in Great White Shark Attack Off Quebec's Gaspé Coast
Plongée Percé suspended diving for the season after the diver was treated and hospitalized, while officials said life-threatening injuries were ruled out.
- On Sept 16, a diver was hospitalized after being bitten by a great white shark off Perc, Que., on the eastern tip of the Gasp Peninsula. The Canadian Coast Guard received the alert at 10:27 a.m. and paramedics met the vessel in Perc.
- White shark sightings have become increasingly common in Atlantic Canada in recent years, according to the Lawrence Shark Observatory, following a recovery of the species previously considered endangered in Canadian waters.
- According to the Canadian Shark Attack Registry, such encounters are exceptionally rare; the registry contains 30 reported incidents over three centuries, with only 15 confirmed in Canadian waters.
- The local diving center Plong thanked emergency teams for their "speed and professionalism," reporting the person received first aid before hospital transport. The center added that no additional details will be communicated out of respect for privacy.
- Plong has suspended all diving activities for the rest of the season as a precautionary measure, stating on Facebook that it will provide updates if new developments warrant it following the Sept 16 incident.
