Popular Potato Chips Recalled Nationwide as Salmonella Fears Spread
No illnesses have been reported, and the recall covers multiple chip flavors tied to a dry milk powder supplier issue, the FDA said.
On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Utz Quality Foods announced a voluntary recall of Zapp and Dirty potato chips nationwide, citing a potential salmonella risk linked to a seasoning ingredient sourced from an outside supplier.
Utz initiated the recall after being notified that dry milk powder sourced from California Dairies might contain salmonella; California Dairies recently issued its own recall for the implicated powder.
Recalled items include various Zapp and Dirty potato chips in multiple sizes and flavors, with affected products carrying best-by dates through August 31, 2026. No illnesses have been reported to Utz in connection with the recall.
The salmonella concern also prompted Ghirardelli to recall certain powdered beverage mixes, while the FDA continues monitoring the California Dairies situation. Consumers should return affected products for a refund.
Salmonella infection can cause serious illness, particularly in young children and the elderly, with symptoms including fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Utz emphasized the recall is limited exclusively to the identified products and batch codes.
