Tinashe Steps Into Her Next Chapter with New Album ‘Popstar’
The 16-track album confronts debates over who can claim pop stardom and follows her 2024 release Quantum Baby.
On Friday, singer Tinashe released her eighth studio album, Popstar, via Nice Life, Atlantic, and Tinashe Music, arriving amid ongoing industry debate over defining 'popstar' status.
The 31-year-old artist has shaped global pop music for a decade, with her 2024 project Quantum Baby and viral hits like 'Nasty' reinforcing her sustained influence and endurance.
Musically, the 16-track set surveys hyperpop, R&B, and jazz, anchoring its lofty ambitions with disarming lyricism on introspective tracks like 'Empty Stadiums' and 'Heavy Weight' exploring fame's mental toll.
Rejecting industry perfectionism, Tinashe notes, "If you win the rat race and you come in first place, then you're still a rat," prioritizing self-worth over external approval.
The album positions Tinashe as the 'architect of her reality' on opening track 'Sunglasses,' showcasing the trials and triumphs of a Black woman in Hollywood.
On "Popstar," Tinashe sings about empty arenas, brain rot, and the feeling of not being good enough. There are buzzy synths and sweet piano melodies, but the album lacks vision, according to DN's Frida Söderqvist.
