Pope Leo XIV urges Italians to rediscover their faith during prayer before remains of St Augustine
The day trip highlights Leo’s focus on Augustinian roots and migrant ministry, with Cabrini honored as a saint who served Italian immigrants in the United States.
On Saturday, Pope Leo XIV traveled to the Lombardy city of Pavia to pray at the tomb of St. Augustine, marking the midway point of his summer 2026 grand tour of Italy.
Leo proclaimed himself a "son of St. Augustine" upon his election and has cited Augustine as the guiding inspiration for his pontificate, following Augustine's conversion to Christianity in Milan centuries ago.
Later Saturday, the American pope visits Sant Angelo Lodigiano, the birthplace of Mother Frances Cabrini, the first American saint and patron saint of migrants.
Embracing the Catholic Church's call to "welcome the stranger," Leo has prioritized his ministry to migrants, recently spending two days in Spain's Canary Islands calling for integration of those fleeing hardship.
Leo's next trip is July 4 to Lampedusa, where the history's first U.S.-born pope will spend Independence Day amid ongoing clashes with the Trump administration over migration policy.
