Pope Leo Appoints Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly to Vatican Dicastery

- On Tuesday, Pope Leo XIV appointed Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly of the Knights of Columbus as a member of the Vatican Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.
- The Dicastery coordinates pastoral care for families and youth, including organizing World Youth Day; Kelly's appointment continues recent high-profile Vatican roles given to U.S. Catholics.
- As CEO of the Knights, which has 2.1 million members worldwide, Kelly manages an organization that frequently finances Vatican projects, including a $817,072 restoration of St. Peter's Basilica's baldachino in 2024.
- "I am deeply grateful to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV for appointing me," Kelly said following the announcement. The Pope previously commended the Knights for "generous service to vulnerable populations."
- The role does not require Kelly to relocate to Rome, where he will join other American members guiding the office's mission, following Montse Alvarado's appointment to lead Vatican communications.
