Pope Leo makes first big Vatican appointment to fill his old job at important bishop’s office
Archbishop Filippo Iannone, a 67-year-old Italian canon lawyer, replaces Pope Leo XIV in leading the Vatican office that vets bishop nominations worldwide.
- On Friday, Pope Leo XIV appointed Archbishop Filippo Iannone as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, marking his first major Vatican office appointment since May.
- The Prefect's role requires assisting the Pope in choosing pastors worldwide, and after the death of Pope Francis, all Vatican prefects lost their jobs until Pope Leo XIV confirmed them provisionally.
- A veteran canon lawyer, Iannone, who will turn 68 on December 13, has headed the Dicastery for Legislative Texts since 2022 and served on the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.
- Vetting bishop nominations worldwide, the Dicastery for Bishops also evaluates complaints and includes the Pontifical Commission for Latin America presidency; Archbishop Ilson de Jesus Montanari and Monsignor Ivan Kova were confirmed for further five-year terms.
- The Holy See Press Office noted the appointment was published in its daily Bulletin and Archbishop Filippo Iannone will take up his post later this year, as several prefects near or at normal retirement age.
