Leo XIV granted the Synods of Bishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches the right to dismiss their own patriarch for a grave cause. The new regulations were included in a Motu Proprio published on August 29. However, the final decision will require papal consent.
They are ancient churches settled in eastern Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa or the Caucasus that abide by the authority of the Holy See, such as the Syrian, Maronite, Armenian, Chaldean or Coptic, and whose leader or patriarch is elected by the Synod of Bishops.
In Motu Proprio Leo XIV, published today, August 29, the Synod of Bishops establishes the competence of the Synod of Bishops to remove its own Patriarch for the purpose of "restoring a breach of communion, even by removing its own Patriarch from office for a grave cause," in the event that their "bond" has been "irreparably damaged."
