Pope Leo XIV Appoints Next Bishop of Honolulu
Castori, 65, has led Seattle University’s Arrupe Jesuit Residence since 2025 and will become Honolulu’s sixth bishop as Silva retires at 76.
- On Wednesday, May 6, Pope Leo XIV appointed Jesuit priest Rev. Michael Thomas Tupou Castori as the sixth Bishop of Honolulu, succeeding Bishop Clarence "Larry" Silva, who led the diocese for two decades.
- Bishop Silva, 76, submitted his resignation as required by Catholic Church canon law upon turning 75, having served as Bishop of Honolulu since 2005.
- Castori, a biblical scholar with a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, brings extensive Pacific experience, having served in ministry across Tonga, Guam, Fiji, and the Marshall Islands.
- Today, Castori is scheduled to celebrate a public Mass at 6 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, offering local Catholics an opportunity to meet their incoming leader.
- Castori's episcopal ordination and installation are scheduled for July 28; Silva will continue leading the Diocese of Honolulu as apostolic administrator until then, after which he becomes Bishop Emeritus following 21 years of service.
