Polk K-9 Ace Goes Home After Losing Leg In Line-Of-Duty Shooting: Watch
The sheriff’s office said Ace is recovering after surgery, and the Wiltse Family Trust offered to pay his medical bills and fund a replacement K-9.
On Sunday, Polk County Sheriff's Office K-9 Ace returned home after being critically wounded in the line of duty, with the seven-year-old German Shepherd losing his leg following the shooting incident.
Last Thursday, suspect Angel Bowers opened fire on deputies during a wooded search, critically wounding Ace in the front left leg while the K-9 tracked the suspect.
Deputy Natalie Oestreich remained by Ace's side throughout his treatment at the Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch, where the six-year veteran underwent successful surgery.
Sheriff Grady Judd credited Ace with helping save three deputies' lives, while The Wiltse Family Trust offered to cover all medical expenses and fund a replacement K-9.
Ace will continue his rehabilitation before settling into retirement with Oestreich and her family, as Judd told WFLA, "Ace is a hero without any doubt at all.
