Sébastien Lecornu asked his ministers, on behalf of the "exemplarity" and in a context of degraded public finances, not to increase the spending of the state, out of defence, in the budget for 2027.
At the heart of a day of announcements, the Prime Minister defended a strategy that he hopes will appease the financial markets and its political opponents.
The Prime Minister, in a letter consulted by franceinfo, on Monday urged the members of the government to "make an extra effort on the state's spending".
"Because of the deteriorating economic situation" at the global level, "I have decided to reopen the ceiling letters in order to make a further effort on government spending," the Prime Minister wrote in a letter to his ministers.
Sébastien Lecornu asked his ministers to keep state expenditure, out of defence, at the level of 2026 for the 2027 budget, due to deteriorating public finances.
