Nine people remain in critical condition after fatal UK train crash
Investigators are working to determine the cause as 28 people remain in hospital and nine stay in critical condition, police said.
Two East Midlands Railway trains bound for London collided just after 5pm on Friday near Bedford, leaving 99 people injured, including nine in critical condition.
The England Ambulance Service reported on Saturday that 11 people sustained very serious injuries, 32 suffered serious injuries, and 56 had minor injuries, with 80 people receiving hospital treatment Friday night.
British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy Orsi confirmed 28 people remain in hospital, saying, "Tragically, the driver of one of the trains died in the collision." Investigators are currently working to establish the cause.
Official responses included Prime Minister Keir Starmer describing the crash as a "devastating incident," while Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying King Charles is "greatly saddened by the rail crash in Bedford yesterday."
Video shared on social media Friday showed the damaged front of one train from Nottingham entangled with another, though carriages remained upright at the collision site near the A421 and A6 in Bedford South.
