Award-Winning Chef Charged with Killing Wife at UMass Amherst Campus Center Hotel
Court records say the chef admitted killing his wife in a hotel room, and he is also charged with assaulting a police officer.
On Wednesday night, 36-year-old Jeffrey MacDonald was arrested and charged with murder in the death of his wife, Emma MacDonald, 31, inside the UMass Campus Center Hotel in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Both the suspect and victim were employees at UMass Amherst; MacDonald, a chef at the university, was named Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation last year.
Police responding to a 911 call at 7:42 p.m. Wednesday found the victim dead after a violent struggle, and MacDonald admitted he had "intentionally beaten his wife to death."
MacDonald pleaded not guilty Thursday morning in Eastern Hampshire District Court on charges of first-degree murder and assault and battery on a police officer.
UMass Amherst Chancellor Javier Reyes stated there is "no ongoing threat" to the campus or community, and the university is providing counseling resources to staff, faculty, and students.
