Indonesia Fire Kills 11, Including Six Children
At least 11 people, including six children aged two to nine, died in a fire in Paniai, Central Papua province, Indonesia, police reported.
The fire broke out just after midnight and spread rapidly through a market and nearby shophouses, destroying at least 40 kiosks and houses over more than three hours.
Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze due to the tightly packed arrangement of buildings and market stalls, making firefighting efforts difficult and prolonged.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which occurred amid a pattern of deadly fires in Indonesia, including a December blaze in Central Jakarta and a 2023 explosion at a nickel plant, both causing multiple fatalities.
