Police in Bali foil an attempt to trade protected 21 live green sea turtles and arrest a suspect
Police said the 67-year-old suspect faces up to 15 years in prison after authorities seized the turtles during a raid prompted by local residents.
On June 10, Bali police raided the Pegametan coast and seized 21 protected green sea turtles, arresting a 67-year-old man identified as KS suspected of storing the animals before distribution for sale.
Indonesia has protected sea turtles under conservation and fisheries laws since 1990, with a 2018 Environment Ministry regulation further clarifying protections for the six species found in the country's waters.
During questioning, KS told investigators an associate sent the animals from waters near Madura, an island in East Java. Nanang Pri Hasmojo, head of law enforcement, said police are pursuing other suspects involved in the network.
Charged under Indonesia's wildlife protection laws, the suspect faces up to 15 years in prison and significant fines if found guilty.
A 2022 study by Arizona State University estimated more than 1.1 million sea turtles were killed between 1990 and 2020, with green turtles, or Chelonia Mydas, accounting for 56% of these killings.
