RAF Typhoons Scrambled in Romania as Russia Strikes Near Border
Romanian and allied jets monitored drones near the border as Russia launched 47 missiles and 619 drones in an overnight assault, officials said.
On Saturday, two Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons operating from Romania shot down Russian drones over Ukrainian territory near Reni for the first time during NATO's Enhanced Air Policing mission.
Russian forces resumed drone attacks against civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine near the river border with Romania in Tulcea County early Saturday, targeting ports along the River Danube.
Falling drone debris struck the southeastern city of Galati, damaging an electricity pole and a household annex. The Ministry of National Defence confirmed "no casualties were reported."
Romania's Ministry of National Defence "strongly condemns the irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation," stating such incidents represent a new challenge to regional security and NATO's collective security.
Tensions have mounted along Europe's eastern flank in recent months after suspected Russian drones breached the airspace of several NATO states. Poland also scrambled military aircraft responding to long-range Russian aviation activity.
Two British Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon aircraft have been forced to take off this Saturday from a Romanian airbase to intercept Russian drones near NATO airspace, although it was not necessary for them to open fire.
