School Safety Plan Bill Pushed After Cotabato Shooting
Investigators found violent online activity and a father’s licensed gun as officials seek tighter school security after the attack killed 2 students.
- On Friday, a Grade 9 student killed two classmates and himself while injuring eight others at Banga National High School in South Cotabato. Authorities are investigating the student's online activity and firearm access.
- Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that investigators found notes regarding depression and extensive deep dark web exposure on the student's cellphone. The firearm belonged to the student's father, an Education Department employee.
- Banga Mayor Albert Palencia and South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. reported that group chat messages showed the student had previously warned friends of plans to attack the school. Classmates were apparently warned but did not believe the threat.
- Education Secretary Sonny Angara announced the student's father was relieved from his post pending investigation. Meanwhile, Meta removed graphic videos of the shooting, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center reported, to prevent copycat violence.
- The Second Congressional Commission on Education is pushing for the Comprehensive School Safety Act, seeking "immediate, actionable safeguards across our education system." The commission added that "strict mandatory safe-storage laws" are needed to prevent minors from obtaining guns.
