Alex Johnston and Jarome Luai Set to Join PNG Chiefs in Major Get for NRL Expansion Team
Johnston is reportedly on a one-year, tax-free $325,000 deal as the expansion club’s first signing, with Jarome Luai still the top target.
South Sydney winger Alex Johnston has become the first player to sign with the Papua New Guinea Chiefs, committing to the NRL's 19th club ahead of their 2028 competition entry.
Johnston, the NRL's record try-scorer with 219 career tries, will join on a one-year, tax-free $325,000 deal after receiving Souths coach Wayne Bennett's blessing earlier this year.
The 31-year-old confirmed the move Tuesday on Instagram with "Yessssss sirrrrrrr," while teammate Sean Keppie said, "You've got to be happy for the bloke" regarding the opportunity.
Prime Minister James Marape welcomed the signing, telling local media, "To be the first high-profile player to come and show interest in our team is something we deeply appreciate."
Penrith playmaker Jarome Luai is expected to confirm his own move to the Chiefs on Wednesday as the expansion franchise's marquee signing on a $1.2 million-a-season deal.
