Vijay Income Row: Madras HC Orders Listing of Plea for Criminal Case
The petitioner says income tax findings show ₹4.93 crore in cash payments for Puli and seeks prosecution and a money-laundering probe.
On Wednesday, the Madras High Court Registry numbered a writ petition seeking an FIR against actor-politician Joseph Vijay for alleged tax irregularities; the case filed by M Rajkumar is expected to be listed for maintainability shortly.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan intervened on April 8, ruling that the Registry had improperly refused to number the petition since maintainability is a judicial function, not an administrative one.
Income tax proceedings at the petition's center stem from 2015, following the film Puli, with Rajkumar alleging Vijay suppressed income and received ₹4.93 crore in unaccounted cash remuneration alongside ₹16 crore in cheques.
Rajkumar seeks directions for law enforcement to register an FIR for cognizable offences including cheating and criminal conspiracy, while requesting an Enforcement Directorate investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam debuted on Monday in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 108 seats but falling short of the 118-seat majority mark in the 234-member chamber.
A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking the registration of an FIR against actor and Tamilaga Vetti Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay in connection with alleged income tax irregularities. The case is said to be related to the 2015 film Puli. The High Court Registry numbered the petition on Wednesday (May 6, 2026), and it is expected to be listed for hearing soon on the issue of maintainability.
