Planned glampsite renews longstanding Canmore concerns on growth pressures
Developers say the 74-site project would reuse idle land, while opponents warn it could worsen wildlife encounters, housing pressure and evacuation bottlenecks.
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, project manager John Third unveiled plans for "Trailhaus," a 74-site glamping campground proposed for nearly 10 hectares of private land on Canmore's Staircase Lands.
Canmore has transformed into a tourism hub in recent years, straining local infrastructure and prompting resident Wendy Walker to launch a petition opposing the development.
Walker raised alarms about wildlife encounters and wildfire safety, stating "There's only one way in and one way out, so in terms of evacuation plans we're terrified," citing parallels to Jasper's evacuation.
Managing partner Zachary Richardson defended the project, noting the land sat idle for 60 years and honors the historic coal seam, while industry analysts report glamping has "increasing demand."
Balancing economic growth with quality of life remains the core challenge for this Rocky Mountain community, as the debate over Staircase Lands reflects broader tensions facing destinations across North America.
