Honeymooners Among 4 Americans Killed in Greece Building Collapse
Authorities believe a gas leak triggered the collapse, which killed four Americans and prompted inspections of nearby buildings deemed dangerous.
- On September 26, four Americans died in a building collapse in Athens' historic Plaka neighborhood, identified as newlyweds Ian Alexander Kirkpatrick, 37, and Florida Hoxha, 34, along with her brother Florin Hoxha and his wife Eris Cani.
- Investigators determined a gas leak in the apartment occupied by Edmond Hings, 78, and his Greek wife of 11 years Athena Papaprescou, 77, triggered an explosion that destroyed the two-story Airbnb where all six were staying.
- Kirkpatrick and Florida exchanged vows in a Long Island ceremony on August 30, then spent a week in Mexico before traveling to Greece for a nine-day honeymoon, with the collapse occurring the day they were scheduled to return home.
- Florin Hoxha, an Emory University alumnus, co-founded construction firm Prufock Builders with his brother Clyde, while Eris Cani, an assistant professor at Touro College, was five-and-a-half months pregnant and practiced pharmacy at Bronx Lebanon Hospital.
- Officials are examining adjacent Plaka buildings after they were deemed dangerous, Athens Deputy Mayor Paris Charlaftis said, while Kirkpatrick's mother, Suzanne Nelson, described him as 'just a wonderful, incredible human being' with 'a zest for life.
