The Giro d’Italia will be held this year from May 8 to 31. The first Grand Tour of the season starts in Nessebar (Bulgaria) and does not return to the home country until after three stages. After 3,459.2 kilometers, of which 40.2 are a time trial, the finish is in Rome.
The spring season full of cycling classics has come to an end. On Friday, the first Grand Tour of the cycling year, the Giro d’Italia, starts in Bulgaria. Seventeen Dutch riders – five of whom have a strong link to our province – will be at the start for what promises to be three weeks of spectacle.
Seventeen Dutch cyclists will start in the Giro d'Italia in Bulgaria on Friday. That is the same number as last year. There is no Dutch contender for the overall victory, but there are opportunities for sprinters like Casper van Uden and Dylan Groenewegen. Van Uden won a stage in the Giro last year, while Groenewegen has never managed to do so.
Picnic PostNL starts the Giro d'Italia on Friday with five Dutch riders. General classification contender Max Poole, who is not fit, is absent, forcing the Dutch cycling team to adjust its strategy.
