PM Shehbaz Assures Pezeshkian of Pakistan's Continued Support in Next Phase of Negotiations
Pakistan said it will support Iran in the next phase of talks after a 30-minute call between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Masoud Pezeshkian.
- On Thursday, the United States and Iran electronically signed the historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a 14-point peace deal ending their 107-day conflict. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif signed as mediator, formalizing the diplomatic breakthrough.
- The conflict, which began February 28, triggered a global energy crisis by forcing the closure of the 55-kilometre-wide Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route carrying one-fifth of global oil supplies.
- Under the deal, the United States will lift its naval blockade while Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz within a 60-day timeline. Washington committed to immediately waiving oil sanctions and will facilitate a $300 billion reconstruction fund upon nuclear agreement.
- During a 30-minute phone call Thursday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian thanked Shehbaz and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir for their mediation, praising their "great skill and sincerity" in steering the process to success.
- Formal signing ceremonies are scheduled for Friday in Geneva, co-hosted by Pakistan and Qatar. Both leaders agreed to visit each other's capitals at the earliest opportunity to carry forward excellent cooperation on bilateral and regional matters.
