Pete Davidson reveals why he left 'Saturday Night Live,' hit rock bottom and got sober
Davidson said losing SNL’s structure pushed him into drugs and rehab before sobriety, and fatherhood later changed his outlook, he told Variety.
Comedian Pete Davidson revealed that leaving Saturday Night Live in 2022 triggered a personal spiral, leading him to reach what he described as 'rock bottom' before seeking rehab treatment.
Losing the SNL routine combined with pressure from creating his semi-autobiographical series Bupkis caused Davidson to revisit painful moments and turn to substances to cope with the emotional toll.
Davidson admitted he wanted to leave NBC almost immediately, telling Lorne Michaels annually, 'I don't f------ work in this!' before finally departing after eight years on the sketch show.
Following an emotional FaceTime call with his mother, Davidson checked himself into rehab and walked away from a second season of Bupkis despite the show's renewal.
Now sober aside from 'four beers a year,' Davidson credits his daughter Scottie with transforming his outlook; she was named after his late father, a firefighter who died in the Sept. 11 attacks.
