Animals in the Netherlands are being neglected increasingly often and more severely. In three years, the number of reports by veterinarians has tripled, and increasingly often these involve dogs, cats, and other animals that are not receiving food, live in filthy kennels, or receive medical care too late. The National Inspectorate for Animal Welfare (LID) is seriously concerned.
This concerns animals that are emaciated, live in heavily polluted homes, or do not receive urgently needed medical care.
The National Inspectorate for Animal Welfare (LID) observed an increase in the severity of animal neglect cases in 2025. "This is now the third year in a row that we are noticing an increase in the severity of reports concerning dogs and cats," said the head of the inspectorate, Gabor van Straten.
