People who fled Stourbridge fires start to return home
Residents are returning after the blaze destroyed 19 homes and left 18 others badly damaged, while investigators continue to examine the cause.
On Sunday, West Midlands Fire Service restarted its process to support Stourbridge residents returning home, directing evacuees to the Worcester Lane/Pedmore Court Road junction with proof of address for one-by-one assessments.
A major incident declared on Thursday, August 13, saw a wildfire spread across more than 500 acres, destroying 19 homes and severely damaging 18 others across five streets in the area.
Emergency officers are conducting in-person assessments to determine if residents can return, require escorts, or cannot yet re-enter; National Grid and Cadent have restored power and gas supplies to most residences.
Community generosity has surged, with a fundraiser by The Fine Collective CIC raising £9,394; officials urge residents to stop bringing donations to the town hall and school because storage capacity is full.
National Fire Chiefs Council chairman Phil Garrigan reported 11 major incidents in the past 48 hours, noting that services remain "under significant pressure" as crews tackle widespread wildfires across the UK.
