Flyers Win Series, Defeating Penguins in Overtime in Game 6
Matvei Michkov returns after a Game 5 healthy scratch as Philadelphia tries to close out the series and Pittsburgh turns to Arturs Silovs in goal.
On Wednesday, Cam York buried the winner 17:32 into overtime, sending the Philadelphia Flyers past the Pittsburgh Penguins 1-0 in Game 6. The victory advances Philadelphia to the second round for the first time in six years.
The Flyers initially led their first-round series against the Penguins 3-0 before Pittsburgh won Games 4 and 5 to force the decisive matchup. Philadelphia had also struggled to score early, going six games without a first-period goal.
Goaltender Dan Vladar stopped all 42 shots to seal the victory, while forward Matvei Michkov returned to the lineup after sitting out Game 5 as a healthy scratch. Michkov had no points in the series but created scoring chances.
Advancing in coach Rick Tocchet's first season, the Flyers will face the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round. The Hurricanes recently swept the Ottawa Senators to reach this matchup.
This series victory marks a major milestone for the organization, which had not reached the second round since the 2020 bubble season. The Flyers return to the playoffs' later stages after a five-year absence.
