After Settlement, CT Mom Pushes Congress to Take up Online Safety
Rodriguez says states can help, but federal action is still needed as Connecticut gets up to $265 million from Meta’s settlement.
- In late August, Connecticut advocate Tammy Rodriguez shifted focus to federal online safety legislation after learning of a landmark multistate settlement with Meta providing Connecticut up to $265 million.
- Rodriguez has campaigned for online safety reforms since the 2021 death of her 11-year-old daughter, Selena, and pressured Congress for years to pass the Kids Online Safety Act, or KOSA.
- The Senate version of KOSA, co-authored by Richard Blumenthal and Marsha Blackburn, passed the Senate in 2024 but stalled. The 'duty of care' provision, which would hold platforms legally responsible for harms to minors, remains a sticking point.
- Other parents, including Deb Schmill, whose 18-year-old daughter Becca died in 2020, continue demanding federal action. "We need the legislation because the companies don't do these things on their own," Rodriguez said.
- Following a unanimous consent request to pass the bill, the Senate departed for a month-long recess, halting business until after the Nov 3 elections. Progress before a January session remains uncertain.
