Panama‑flagged cargo ship sinks off eastern India, coast guard says
Indian authorities launched a joint rescue after the iron ore carrier sank with 24 crew members aboard, and nearby vessels were alerted to help.
On Saturday, a Panama-flagged cargo ship sank in the Bay of Bengal approximately 240 nautical miles off the Paradip Coast while carrying iron ore from Odisha to Singapore.
The vessel departed the Odisha coast on Friday, according to an officer, before sinking the following day during its voyage to Singapore.
Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy launched a joint rescue operation, alerting nearby vessels to assist in locating the 24 crew members aboard.
A senior IPS officer told PTI, "We are not sure how many of the crew members have been rescued," noting the crew was predominantly Chinese.
Authorities continue coordinating the joint mission to locate all 24 crew members, with success depending on rapid response times in the Bay of Bengal.
According to Indian authorities, two crew members out of a total of 24 have been rescued so far, while the causes of the sinking are being investigated.
