Pakistan Issues 'Strong Demarche' to Norwegian Ambassador over Presence in SC During Imaan Mazari Case
Pakistan's Foreign Office called the envoy's attendance interference and breach of diplomatic protocol, urging Norway to respect its sovereignty amid a controversial social media case.
- On Thursday, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Norwegian ambassador over his presence at a court hearing in Islamabad and urged Norway to respect Pakistan's sovereignty.
- The court hearing involved lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Advocate Hadi Ali Chattha, who face an NCCIA case under Sections 9, 10, 11 and 26 of PECA, 2016 and were indicted on October 30.
- Defending the presence, Mazari wrote on X that diplomats `routinely observe` proceedings and said observation does not mean taking a position on the case.
- Officials characterised the attendance as a protocol breach, with Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi saying it `amount to interference` and urging adherence to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
- Amid legal uncertainty, the trial was halted pending the Islamabad High Court decision, while the First Information Report alleges attempts to incite linguistic divisions on social media.
